For a watery cup, compare the drink volume

First check whether the variety is intended for espresso or a longer cup. Prepare a fresh pod following its recommendation and measure the drink volume. Use the same variety for your next comparison. You can then judge a smaller or larger cup deliberately without changing the blend at the same time.

For bitter or sour flavours, vary one thing at a time

A flavour impression alone does not prove a particular fault. First compare a brew made according to the product recommendation with your previous preparation. If the appliance offers suitable settings, change them only within the manufacturer’s guidance. Try another blend afterwards. You do not need to alter the grind or coffee dose of a ready-made E.S.E. pod.

Check the packaging and pod

Use a fresh pod in the explicitly suitable format. Open it only just before brewing and insert it according to the appliance instructions. Check that the filter paper is intact and the portion sits correctly. After extended storage, also check whether the pack has been exposed to heat or moisture.

Slow or absent flow is a separate question

If little or no coffee flows, treat it as more than a flavour question. Check the water tank, correct pod placement and the causes listed in your manual. The illy E.S.E. manual lists an empty or incorrectly fitted tank and limescale among possible causes. These model-specific notes do not replace your own machine’s instructions.

Follow the care instructions and compare under the same conditions

For cleaning and descaling, follow the products, quantities and procedures specified by your appliance manufacturer. Then repeat the comparison with the same variety and drink volume. If a malfunction persists, use the designated service route. A different coffee is not a repair for a faulty appliance.

Questions and answers

Must an E.S.E. espresso always be ready in exactly 25 seconds?

One fixed time is not a general requirement for every variety and machine. Follow the relevant manufacturer recommendations and compare the actual drink volume.

Can I press the pod further or cut it open?

E.S.E. pods are already portioned, ground and pressed. Use them unchanged in the intended holder and according to the appliance instructions.

Is little crema alone proof of poor pods?

No. Assess the flavour and the entire brew. Compare a fresh, correctly inserted pod under the same conditions instead of inferring a cause from crema alone.
